Costuming for Seussical the Musical, Gertrude's tail?

Ok, I am the costumer for a local production of Seussical. I am all good with all the costumes, but I can't think of how to do Gertrude's tail. Boas are expensive and I don't have much of a budget to get boas for that long of a tail. Anyone every been in this show? Any ideas? How will I get her tail to "grow" on stage? That is my main concern... ANY tips or ideas regarding the tail would be most appreciated. Thanks! =)
