I want to dye my hair.?

I have light blonde / wheat color, dead straight hair and I want to dye it brunette. My skin is light, very little tan. What shade should I dye my hair. And I have feathers in my hair so if I do a home dye will they get dyed too? And do I need to redye my roots and how often?
